first_imgNew Zealand have squared up the Trans-Tasman Mens Opens series in a tight and tense affair that went down to the wire.The Kiwis jumped out of the blocks to score in the opening set of the match through Ashton Robinson before Dylan Hennessey picked up from where he left off in game 1 strolling over to even things up six minutes into the contest.The visitors hit the lead shortly after when Scott Buckley squeezed through a hole on the short side to push the score out to 2-1. As was the case for most of night the Kiwis responded and they did so with a classy pass from Shaq Stone to Michael Cavanagh.Stone’s pass was classy but Pete Norman’s response was just as sublime as he hit Jordan Marshall-King on the chest to give the Australians a 3-2 half time lead.Shaun Francis had a chance to extend the lead 4 minutes into the second half but couldn’t hang onto a difficult chance on the right wing. Stone made the Aussies pay at the other end when he laid it on for Reihana Soutar-Finch and when Pamatatau the Kiwis suddenly found themselves in front approaching the final quarter of the match.With the score sitting at 5-4 a controversial repeat set to the Australians gave Hennessey the chance to tie it up which he did with a deft pass to Jordan Marshall-King. With the clock ticking into the last minute Michael Cavanagh broke the deadlock for the Kiwis who held on in the frenetic final moments to set up a thrilling finish to the series in tomorrow’s final test of the series.last_img
