The reality of abortion and the unborn

first_imgStuff co.nz 22 October 2019Family First Comment: “Surely Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern saw the heart beating on the early scans of her baby Neve. Surely she felt movements of her baby during pregnancy. Does she deny her precious infant was once an unborn child? Why is it that when the baby is wanted we celebrate the miracle of a new life, but when it is not wanted we don’t even admit it exists? Every abortion has the intent of destroying an unborn child. It is unspeakably violent and repelling when such a child is torn apart limb from limb during surgical abortion. I know – because early in my medical career I was part of the killing process. Whatever the situation and distress of the mother, the gravity of the killing of an innocent child, however young, is a fearful decision.”Watch interviews with Dr MacLean at www.abortionprocedures.nzOPINION: The Abortion Legislation Bill confronts us with the reality of the humanity and value of the unborn child.Biology shows us that human life begins at the beginning. The 1977 Royal Commission, having heard from eminent international scientists, concluded “that from conception the child is a distinct individual human life”.Obstetricians have long recognised they are responsible for two patients, the mother and the child in the womb.Pregnancy can be diagnosed 10 days after conception when the embryo is not able to be seen by the naked eye – because a hormone produced from the embryo leaks into the mother’s circulation and can be measured in her blood or urine. After 10 weeks the unborn child, 3cm in length, has hands, feet, eyes, brain, liver and kidneys. The baby is moving and electrical activity can be recorded within the brain. Hiccupping, swallowing, eye movements and passing urine are daily activities. Survival requires only protection and nourishment, just as for a newborn. The bill would allow an abortion before 20 weeks’ gestation with no medical reason; after 20 weeks if a single doctor believes it “appropriate”.At 20 weeks’ – mid-pregnancy – many mothers notice kicking. The baby is about the length of a banana and weighs 500 grams. He or she will sleep and wake. Face and body are assuming the appearance of a full-term baby. The baby has a sucking reflex and is seen on scans sucking his or her thumb. Finger and toe nails are present; fine hair grows on the scalp.By 20 weeks the baby can hear sounds, including the mother’s breathing and heartbeat.READ MORE: https://www.stuff.co.nz/southland-times/opinion/116736702/the-reality-of-abortion-and-the-unbornKeep up with family issues in NZ. Big Bang Fails Prediction: Is the Theory in Trouble?

first_imgAstronomers looking at WMAP data (03/20/2006, 05/02/2003) of the cosmic background radiation failed to find shadows predicted by the big bang, reported Science Daily.  So what?  Here’s what Dr. Richard Lieu (U of Alabama) said this means: “Either it (the microwave background) isn’t coming from behind the clusters, which means the Big Bang is blown away, or … there is something else going on.”  The Science Daily report began, “The apparent absence of shadows where shadows were expected to be is raising new questions about the faint glow of microwave radiation once hailed as proof that the universe was created by a “Big Bang.’”    The background radiation should be behind galaxy clusters and should cast shadows, but only one-fourth as much shadowing was detected, and that could be indistinguishable from natural variation in the already-faint signal.  Though astronomers are seeking an explanation, none is claiming that the research team didn’t do their homework.  Their results, which they offer as open to scrutiny, is published in the Sept. 1 Astrophysical Journal.11Lieu, Mittaz and Zhang, “The Sunyaev-Zel’dovich Effect in a Sample of 31 Clusters: A Comparison between the X-Ray Predicted and WMAP Observed Cosmic Microwave Background Temperature Decrement,” The Astrophysical Journal, 648:176-199, 2006 September 1.Theories that are widely accepted are rarely overthrown by one measurement.  Even the great Laplace did not abandon caloric theory after Count Rumford demonstrated by cannon-boring experiments that it was absurd to think a finite piece of metal could store an infinite amount of the imponderable substance (see UCI lecture notes and Wikipedia).    Most cosmologists will undoubtedly feel this paper is “interesting” rather than threatening.  They will respond that the big bang theory has so much going for it, one anomaly will not demand an overhaul.  Some will seek alternative explanations for the Lieu et al data.  What shouldn’t be allowed is for the cosmological community to ignore this paper.  Science does not advance by ignor-ance.(Visited 13 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0last_img read more

SA, Angola to cooperate on oil

first_img24 August 2009 South Africa and Angola signed a raft of agreements, including an agreement on cooperation in the oil sector, following a two-day visit to the resource-rich country by President Jacob Zuma and a powerful South African government and business delegation last week. The oil cooperation agreement will allow South African state oil company PetroSA and Angola’s Sonangol to work together on oil exploration, refining and distribution projects. Angola, Africa’s biggest oil producer, has only one refinery, in the capital Luanda. It currently imports a great deal of its refined gasoline. Zuma met with Angolan President Jose Eduardo dos Santos in Luanda on Thursday. He was accompanied by 11 Cabinet ministers and more than 150 business leaders, making it the biggest delegation South Africa has sent outside the country since 1994. The two-day excursion, Zuma’s first state visit to a foreign country since his inauguration earlier this year, was at the invitation of Dos Santos. Dos Santos hailed the visit as the start of a new era of co-operation between Africa’s biggest economy and its biggest oil producer. He said Angola needed South African expertise to help rebuild the infrastructure destroyed during a 27-year civil war that ended in 2002. “We want to create a strategic partnership between our two countries,” he said. Zuma and Dos Santos also discussed the supply and distribution of electricity from the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Inga hydroelectric plant, and other regional infrastructure projects to facilitate business. The two countries also signed air services and diplomatic consultation agreements, as well as memorandums on trade, industry, commerce, housing, and sport and recreation. It was further agreed that a bi-national commission would be established to coordinate political and economic relations between the two countries. Both leaders added that they would discuss ways of cooperating on peacekeeping efforts in Africa through the Southern African Development Community (SADC). Angola and South Africa have two of the biggest military forces in Africa. Zuma said the agreements would help to change the economic landscape of southern Africa. “I urge business leaders of both our countries to explore these avenues of collaboration and turn potential into profit,” Zuma said. Zuma has invited Dos Santos to undertake an official visit to South Africa On Friday, Zuma travelled to Bengo Province, north of Luanda to visit Pango Camp, a military base for the African National Congress’s (ANC’s) former liberation army, Umkhonto WeSizwe. Zuma said this should remind South Africans of where the free South Africa came from, and encourage them to work harder for the goals for which many lost their lives. Moto G2 likely go on sale on Sept 10: Report

first_imgThe Moto G (pictured here) helped Motorola sell one million Moto phones in India in five monthsMoto G2, the successor of phenomenally popular Moto G, will go on sale on September 10 at a price of around $335. According to a report by GSMArena, a website that covers smartphone-related news, the launch information about Moto G has been revealed by a retailer who got the information “straight from a Motorola” representative.Recently, the Moto G got a price cut in India and it is possible that the move was aimed to clear the existing stock and make space for the Moto G2.The Moto G2 is likely to have upgraded hardware compared to the Moto G. It will possibly sport a bigger screen — 5-inch screen compared to the 4.5-inch on the Moto G — and will have a 8-megapixel rear camera and 2-megapixel front camera. The screen will have the same 720P resolution. The leaked information hits that the device will be powered by a quad-core Snapdragon 400 processor running at 1.2GHz, will have 1GB RAM and 8GB internal storage. It is likely to have dual-SIM functionality. If these specifications are correct, the Moto G2 looks like a moderate update over the Moto G. The price of the new phone is rumoured to be $335, which is almost double of the launch price of the Moto G. If the price is correct, in India the Moto G2 is likely to cost around Rs 20,000.Though Motorola had delayed the launch of Moto G in India and brought it here only in February, the phone has been a big success for the company. Considering the numbers Moto G has notched up here, it is possible that Motorola will include India among the first markets where the Moto G2 will go on sale.  advertisementFor Motorola, the Moto G has been its most successful smartphone ever. Priced aggressively and aimed at markets in developing countries, the phone offered consumers almost “pure” Android experience in a compact and fully-functional device. Another factor that contributed to the success of the Moto G was lack of competition. When Motorola launched Moto G last year, most companies were selling affordable Android phones that had performance issues and poor screens. But the situation has changed in the last few months, especially in countries like India. The new Moto G2 will have to not only compete against good sub-Rs 10,000 devices like Asus Zenfone 5 but will also have to deal with Xiaomi Mi3, which sells for less than Rs 15,000 and yet offers performance comparable to something provided by high-end phones like the Galaxy S4 and the LG G2.Follow author on Twitter @Javed_dellast_img read more

Plus Agent P doesn’t have a 100 per cent success rate — just look at Antoine Griezmann, who is still at Atletico Madrid after rumours he and Pogba were ready to link up with United.Still it’s something for United fans to dream about for the future, and just another worry for Arsenal and Liverpool supporters.last_img read more

Spain Among Highest Ranked Investors in Jamaica

first_imgSpain is now among the highest ranked investors in Jamaica, says Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator the Hon. Kamina Johnson Smith.Speaking at Spain’s National Day reception, held on October 10 at the Ambassador of Spain’s residence in Kingston, the Minister said that Jamaica has been able to attract investments from six of the top-10 hotel chains from Spain.“We particularly welcome Spain’s goal to introduce a “second wave” of Spanish investments that would go beyond the traditional areas of cooperation to include energy, logistics and the agricultural sectors,” Senator Johnson Smith added. She said bilateral cooperation with Spain has been active this year, noting that she travelled to the country earlier this year for the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on Political Consultations between the two countries.“This seeks to advance our relations at the highest political and diplomatic levels, while strengthening our economic ties,” the Senator pointed out.Senator Johnson Smith cited the tangible benefits derived from Spanish investments and noted the ongoing construction of the 190-megawatt power plant in Old Harbour Bay by the Spanish firm, TSK Group, which has created 239 local jobs, with 140 jobs being held by persons from the surrounding communities. In the area of Spanish language education, she said that 105 teachers of Spanish recently benefited from an intensive four-day training programme by the Cervantes Institute, Spain’s flagship institution, in the teaching of Spanish.“We are truly grateful for Spain’s continued support as we strive to implement policies that will lead to the people of Jamaica being better positioned to capitalise on the opportunities present in today’s global marketplace,” she said. The event, hosted by the Spanish Ambassador to Jamaica, His Excellency Josep Bosch and his wife, Teresa Gonzalez de Bosch, was attended by Ministers of Government, members of the diplomatic corps, senior government officials and staff of the Embassy of Spain.Ambassador Bosch said that his Government will continue in its efforts “to create a more bilingual Jamaica”.“We are beginning to deliver with a tight collaboration with the Ministry of Education. From this September, we have two Spanish lecturers, one in Shortwood Teachers’ College and another at Sam Sharpe (Teachers’ College),” he added. He said the Embassy of Spain will continue to assist with Spanish language training for teachers and hotel workers.Last year, the institute organised Spanish introductory courses for hotel staff with the support of the Ministry of Tourism.“Spanish language really matters. It means better jobs and more opportunities for Jamaicans,” Ambassador Bosch said.last_img read more
