This new service is powered by Lala and MySpace’s iLike. Other partners include Gracenote, iMeem, Pandora and Rhapsody. Google has also partnered with the major music labels: EMI, Sony Music, Universal Music Group and Warner Music. Through Lala and iLike, Google will also be able to feature music from a large number of independent labels. This new service will be available only in the US for now and will be integrated in the default search results page.Rumors about the impending launch of Google’s music initiative flared up last week when members of the press received invitations to an event in Los Angeles that was going to feature both iLike and Lala (not to mention “members of Linkin Park”). Users could already use the parameter “music:” to bring up Google’s music search, though Google never promoted it, and this old feature didn’t include the ability to stream music right on the page. Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting What Will This New Feature Look Like? In this new implementation, users can’t choose between the Lala or iLike widget. Instead, Google will randomly decide which widget a user sees. This gives Google the option to switch between services and to include other services in future as well.Buy Songs from Rhapsody – See Lyrics from GracenoteUnderneath the music onebox results, Google will feature links to its other partners, like Rhapsody and iMeem, where users will be able to purchase MP3s.Google’s partnership with Gracenote also allows it to show lyrics in the search results now. As Marissa Mayer pointed out in today’s announcement, finding lyrics is still very hard on Google. Now, users can type lyrics into the default search box and Google will return results from the music search feature, and users can play the song right on the search results page.Big Winners: Lala and MySpace The big winners here are obviously Lala and MySpace/iLike. For Lala, this has been an especially busy period. Just last week, Lala announced a partnership with Facebook. It now powers Facebook’s music gifting service. iLike has a traditional streaming model. The company streams some song full length and some as 30-second samples. Users can buy MP3s from iLike for between $0.99 and $1.29. MySpace bought iLike earlier this year, and the widget on the Google search results page will be MySpace-branded.Lala’s business model is more interesting. Users can stream every song on the service once for free. After that, customers can buy the right to stream it for $0.10 or buy the MP3 for $0.89. Users can also upload their own music library to Lala and then stream those songs freely over the Internet. How important this move is for the two streaming music services becomes clear when we look at the current traffic data for music-related searches on Google. Update: We just had a quick chat with Lala’s CEO Geoff Ralston after the event. The Lala team is obviously very excited about the partnership with Google and as Ralston told us, the company worked with Google for quite a while to get this new feature up and running. According to Ralston, Lala’s partners in the music industry were very supportive of the integration. We also asked him if he was worried that the new influx of traffic was going to bring Lala’s servers down. Google, however, stress tested Lala’s servers and couldn’t bring the service down with up to 550 queries per second. What Does Google’s Current Music Traffic Look Like? Hitwise’s Heather Dougherty took a close look at Google’s music traffic earlier today. According to Hitwise’s data, about 6% of last month’s top 1000 search terms on Google were music-related. In total, Google sent about 1.48% of its traffic to music sites. The majority of these searches (15.32%) lead to a Wikipedia site, but almost 10% currently go to YouTube, 5.7% to Yahoo Music and 3% to MySpace. Now that users can listen to music right from the search results page, these services – including Google’s own YouTube – will likely see a drop in music-related traffic over the next few weeks. 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market

The women used Google Map Maker, and their specific local knowledge, to fill in schools, health centers, market centers, community development projects, restaurants and roads in a country too often neglected by cartographers. Jacqueline Rajuai, Geo Specialist with Google, said the mix of women and the skills and knowledge they brought ranged widely. “The bigger aim of all this is to make the world’s information accessible, and also to make sure that we get more African content, and to make the internet useful and relevant for Africans.”Any readers involved in other crowdsourced mapping projects? Their backgrounds were quite an interesting mix as we had Computer Science students and Geography students, participants with an environmental background but the common factor is that they had an interest to improve the Kenya maps. Either where they live, where they have projects or areas they frequent.”This is hardly the first time Google has invited people to an intensive mapping party. Not unlike the independent Map Kibera experiment, Google invited the inhabitants of Korogocho to put themselves on the map. A Pakistan project brought people together last year to map changes after that country’s horrific mudslides. Google is hardly a non-profit. All the information entered is available for further iterations of the company’s maps. However, Rajuai says this undertaking extends beyond making a profit.
Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar is taking guard to bat for an all-new cause. The preparation seems to be impeccable – just as you had seen him at Wankhede, the WACA in Perth, Trent Bridge or the Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain – and could see him playing a larger political role in the coming days.Four months into his innings as a Rajya Sabha Member, he appears to have got a measure of the political pitch and is clearly keen to make his time out in the middle count. The result is a letter to Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Kapil Sibal on the issue of integrating sports with education.Tendulkar has sent a presentation to Sibal on his vision of how sports can get its due in the country’s education system. Writing in his capacity as an Elder, he says he wants to meet Sibal and is keen to further the cause of sports.Sibal told Mail Today, “Yes, I have received a letter from Sachin. I have written back to him asking him to come to the HRD ministry to make a presentation on the subject.”Sources close to the minister said that while the minister is personally inclined to incorporate Tendulkar’s suggestions in the curriculum, such matters are decided by the National Council of Education Research and Training (NCERT) and the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) which will work out the modalities for the same.Political dutiesTendulkar’s initiative in reaching out to Sibal – his first steps in trying to address a larger audience as a politician with the prospect of a role in government – comes at a time when his comment on reassessing his cricketing future in November has fuelled speculation on his retirement from cricket.Union HRD Minister Kapil Sibal.”When I feel that I am not delivering what is needed, and then I will re-look at the scheme of things. I am already 39 and no one expects me to go on playing forever,” he said in an interview to a private TV channel on October 5.Sachin’s letter to Sibal could not have come at a better time for his efforts to seek a formal role for sports in education. The HRD ministry has of late been focusing on giving education a holistic outlook, which includes according importance to sports and co- curricular activities in schools and higher education. For instance, in the case of Unmukt Chand, the under-19 cricketer who was not allowed to appear for his college examination because of low attendance, Sibal had intervened to get him an exemption.Recently, the minister approved UGC guidelines to provide free education to undergraduate and postgraduate students who win laurels for the country at the Olympics or world championships.According to the sporting fraternity, Tendulkar’s efforts to highlight sports in curriculum will make a quicker and bigger impact. “It’s a great initiative from Sachin Tendulkar,” said former cricketer Ravi Shastri.”Yes, sports should be included in the curriculum. It’s a great gesture from Sachin and his voice can make a great impact. Sport is important not only for winning medals but for the general health of the nation,” said badminton player P. Gopichand.Olympic medal winner and boxer Mary Kom hopes that this will benefit all sporting disciplines and not just cricket.”I would want that all sport be given equal importance and not just cricket. Because, in that case, youngsters will choose only that sport,” Kom said.New inningsThe veteran cricketer was sworn in as a nominated member of the Rajya Sabha on June 4 this year. There were mixed reactions to this. It was then that Tendulkar had first said that he would like to be remembered as someone who contributed to all sports.”With the nomination as Rajya Sabha member, I think I am in a better position not only to help cricket but also other sports in the country which is really important and means a lot to me. And I will try my best to help other sports,” he had told reporters right after his swearing-in.Meanwhile, an HRD ministry official said that the ministry had already taken steps towards integrating sports with education.”The minister would like to meet him ( Tendulkar) to get a better understanding of his ideas and vision,” a ministry official said.advertisement
