What we learned from Syracuse’s 50-7 season-opening win over Central Connecticut State

first_img Facebook Twitter Google+ Published on September 2, 2017 at 9:22 am Contact Tomer: [email protected] | @tomer_langer UPDATED: Sept. 10, 2017 at 10:53 p.m.In an expected blowout, Syracuse (1-0) pummeled past Central Connecticut State (0-1), 50-7, in its season-opener. It was the first chance to get a glimpse at the new-look Orange, albeit against an inferior opponent that got “overwhelmed” at times, as CCSU head coach Pete Rossomando said. Here’s what we learned from the game.Revolving doorIt was announced shortly before the game that linebacker Jonathan Thomas would miss the game due to a violation of team rules. Thomas started nine games last season as the strong-side linebacker.Newly-converted linebacker Kielan Whitner sat behind him on the depth chart, and came on for the first play of the game. But by the second play, he was on the sideline, with graduate transfer Austin Valdez in his place.AdvertisementThis is placeholder textIt’s unclear if and when Thomas will come back. Whitner doesn’t have much experience at the position, while Valdez didn’t seem to be progressing all that quickly in training camp. Neither one seemed to come out ahead from this game. “We want to keep both those guys fresh,” head coach Dino Babers said, “…we think we’ve got some guys who can play, some depth.”Todd Michaelel | Contributing PhotographerAccepting the factEric Dungey ran some more in today’s game and statistically had some success. He rushed for 52 yards and two scores and was SU’s most efficient and effective threat on the ground. There’s always a health concern when your quarter back takes off, and it’s been attached to Dungey since the start. It seems though that Babers has become less focused on changing Dungey’s style of play. “That’s how he is. Obviously, he’s very difficult to change when it comes to that stuff,” Babers said. “But it makes his game.”Babers stressed that he wanted Dungey to be safer and commended him for running out of bounds on a few plays. Still, the second-year SU head coach did accept that Dungey still had a ways to go in the self-preservation area. Returning roleAntwan Cordy’s injury was a blow to the secondary. But another area where he was projected to contribute, at least per the depth chart, was as a punt returner. He never went back in this game, though. Before he got hurt, wide receiver Steve Ishmael came on to return a punt. Ishmael went back there twice. Eventually, after Cordy got hurt, Sean Riley went back to return punts.Riley is the primary kick-returner and is very speedy, but struggled in his opportunities tonight. Some were poor coverage situations where Riley just had to call a fair catch. But twice in the second quarter he tried to force the issue, only to lose yards on the return.SU had the nation’s best punt returner last year in Brisly Estime. Who solidifies a stronghold on the job is worth monitoring moving forward. Commentslast_img read more

Caroline wins second English senior title

first_img17 May 2019 Caroline wins second English senior title Cheshire’s Caroline Berry was queen of the greens today as she claimed her second win in the English Senior Women’s Amateur Championship at Enville Golf Club in Staffordshire. She holed a 25-footer for birdie on the 15th to close out the final, defeating Paula Carver of Sussex by 4/3.“To say I am thrilled is the understatement of the world,” said Berry, from Bromborough Golf Club.“It gets harder and harder and these youngsters are getting better and better. But sometimes you have the feeling that it’s your year and I felt good coming in to this, good about my game and good about my putting.”Berry’s game was in all-round great shape in the final, but her putting was outstanding and she holed a number of clutch putts to keep or extend her lead.In one rare aberration on the 11th, she misjudged a putt from off the green, sending it about 20ft past the pin, but she simply rolled in the return to win the hole with a par.“My putting has been the strongest part of my game,” said Berry. “Usually it’s my driving but I struggled little bit at the start of the week. But I felt I hit the ball better and better as the week went on.”She last won this championship at Littlestone in 2010, but counts this as the sweeter win. “That’s not to take anything away from the girls I played then, it was a really good win. But the standard this week! I had to beat three people who played for England last year to get to the final.”There was special praise for her husband and caddy, Geoff, who is the Bromborough club professional. “Geoff is a star,” she said “I do think two heads are better than one.”Berry clinched her place in the final this morning after winning a tight match against senior international Jackie Foster (Bishops Stortford) on the 18th.  In earlier matches she defeated internationals Karen Jobling (Richmond) and Sue Spencer (Whittington Heath) after beating Jane Sly (Mill Ride) in the first round.Meanwhile Carver (Worthing) defeated Clarissa Bushell (West Sussex) 3/2 in an all-Sussex semi-final clash. Earlier, she beat Amanda Mayne (Saltford), Jan Harrison (Launceston) and Janette McWhirter (Appleby). This was only Carver’s second appearance in the championship and she commented after the final: “I just didn’t get enough pars, but that takes nothing away from Caroline, she played very solidly.”In the over 60s Ann Howard Trophy, Nottinghamshire’s Carol Wild (pictured below) successfully defended her title. She beat Sheree Dove-Wilde (Camberley Heath) by one hole.“I am ecstatic, I can’t believe it” said Wild, who is the captain of Notts Ladies Golf Club. “I thought it would be tough and I felt the pressure coming into this, even though I’m playing well and my handicap has come down.”Click here for full scores in the championship Wendy Taylor SalverClick here for full scores in the Ann Howard TrophyImages copyright Leaderboard Photography Tags: English Senior Women’s Amateur, Enville Golf Clublast_img read more

DeGroot proves he belongs with top-25 finish at High School Championships

first_imgBy Bruce Fuhr,The Nelson Daily SportsIt didn’t matter if the opposition was from the East or West Kootenay this season Shawn DeGroot has managed to overcome roots, rocks and mud to finish ahead of the pack.So obviously the next test was a trip to the B.C. High School Cross Country Championships.DeGroot, 16, did not disappoint his followers as the LVR runner finished 24th overall at the recent championship event at Beaver Lake near Victoria.“Ya, I’m happy with the result,” the Grade 11 DeGroot said when asked about his finish. “I did a lot of training for provincials and it paid off.”“My goal was to finish in the top 25, so I guess I just barely achieved my goal,” he added. One of biggest supporters of DeGroot is coach Jon Francis, who was definitely impressed with the top-25 result.“It’s the best Kootenay finish since I started coaching in 2002,” said LVR and Salmo coach. “(Shawn) had an incredible race.”When DeGroot runs in the Kootenays the field generally consists of 20-30 racers. At the provincials, there were more than 300 runners at the start line.“It was crazy at the start,” explained the 5’9”, 140-pound DeGroot. “There were about 300 runners in mass start that narrows down about 50 meters away. I didn’t really have that great of start and got sandwiched in the pack.”DeGroot found the going tough stuck in the middle for the first lap of the 6.5 kilometer race. However, during the second lap the pack thinned out allowing DeGroot to put the feet in overdrive.“Eventually I made my way up where I wanted to be,” said DeGroot, having to run in cool, drizzly conditions over a muddy track. “The first kilometer I couldn’t move anywhere.”DeGroot posted a 51st place finish in 2009 along with an amazing sixth-place spot in 2008 in the Junior Boy’s race. The provincial meet concludes the cross-country season for DeGroot. But the competitive season doesn’t end there.DeGroot simply shifts gears from muddy ground to ice white snow as a member of the B.C. Nordic Development Team.“Hopefully the snow will fall soon so I’ll be able to start training,” he said.DeGroot’s goal this season is the Canadian Nationals set for Canmore, Alta., in March. Results of other racers from West Kootenay School include:Lukas Smith, J.V. Humphries, Kaslo, 142; Steven Hernandez, Mount Sentinel, 158; Hunter Stanway, JVH 202; Luca Stattler, L.V.
