In the Oct 14 issue of Nature,1 Gary Marcus (Dept. of Psychology, New York University) appears conflicted about how human language arose. He wants to attribute it to a Darwinian process:If, as François Jacob famously argued, evolution is like a tinkerer who builds something new by using whatever is close at hand, then from what is the human capacity for language made? Most accounts of the evolution of language have focused on characterizing changes that are internal to the language system. Were the earliest forms of language spoken or (like sign language) gestured? Did language arise suddenly? Or did it emerge gradually, progressing step by step from a simple one-word ’protolanguage’ (limited to brief comments about the ‘here and now’) into a more complex system that combined individual words into structured meaningful sentences encompassing the future, the past and the possible – as well as the concrete present?….Yet in the last sentence, after considering several options of how language might have arisen and developed by natural processes, he cannot help but wonder at the result:To the extent that the neural or genetic substrates of language and cognition overlap, language should be understood not just as an adaptation selected for effective communication, but also as a darwinian descendant with modification from pre-existing cognitive systems. Studying how linguistic systems may have descended with modification from cognitive precursors could in turn elucidate the oft-noted (but never satisfactorily explained) co-morbidity between language disorders and other cognitive impairments, in terms of overlap in genetic and neural machinery. At the same time, by highlighting how new mechanisms can be built on top of old, we may be able to make better sense of the mystery of how, within a relatively short period of time, with just a relatively small amount of genetic change, humans evolved the amazing gift of speech.1Gary Marcus, “Concepts: Before the Word,” Nature 431, 745 (14 October 2004); doi:10.1038/431745a.Can a schizophrenic psychologist understand human language? He sees the “amazing gift of speech,” with all its mystery and wonder, but wants to attribute it to a goddess tinkering with parts cobbled from whatever is at hand (shall we name the evolutionary goddess Charlotte, the fairy godmother of Charles Darwin)? He can’t have it both ways. Either language is an amazing gift, designed by intelligence, or it is a meaningless end product of a mindless, undirected natural process. How much evidence does Mr. Marcus have for his speculation about language arising by evolution? (Dead silence.)(Visited 11 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0

New GPS satellites are expected to increase accuracy. The U.S. is upgrading its constellation of GPS satellites. They’ll be replaced in an effort to greatly improve accuracy. Good news for geocachers. The replacement satellites are expected to sharpen the accuracy of your GPS device from about 20 feet to just an arm’s length. They’re also touted as being more reliable – meaning you won’t lose the signal as often.Hopefully, this means fewer Did Not Finds (DNFs) on the horizon. But it’ll take a while to reach the horizon. The first generation of satellites will reportedly be swapped out one for one over the next decade. The launch of the first of the next generation of GPS satellites has been scrubbed three times due to weather or technical glitches. The fourth time proved to be a charm. The rocket carrying the satellite lifted off Thursday, May 27th from Cape Canaveral, Florida. The satellites’ software will be upgradable while they are in space and also continue to broadcast an atomic clock, keeping time to a billionth of a second.Besides guiding travelers to destinations, ambulance crews to emergencies and owners to lost dogs, how else do we use GPS each day?Share with your Friends:More

This new service is powered by Lala and MySpace’s iLike. Other partners include Gracenote, iMeem, Pandora and Rhapsody. Google has also partnered with the major music labels: EMI, Sony Music, Universal Music Group and Warner Music. Through Lala and iLike, Google will also be able to feature music from a large number of independent labels. This new service will be available only in the US for now and will be integrated in the default search results page.Rumors about the impending launch of Google’s music initiative flared up last week when members of the press received invitations to an event in Los Angeles that was going to feature both iLike and Lala (not to mention “members of Linkin Park”). Users could already use the parameter “music:” to bring up Google’s music search, though Google never promoted it, and this old feature didn’t include the ability to stream music right on the page. Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting What Will This New Feature Look Like? In this new implementation, users can’t choose between the Lala or iLike widget. Instead, Google will randomly decide which widget a user sees. This gives Google the option to switch between services and to include other services in future as well.Buy Songs from Rhapsody – See Lyrics from GracenoteUnderneath the music onebox results, Google will feature links to its other partners, like Rhapsody and iMeem, where users will be able to purchase MP3s.Google’s partnership with Gracenote also allows it to show lyrics in the search results now. As Marissa Mayer pointed out in today’s announcement, finding lyrics is still very hard on Google. Now, users can type lyrics into the default search box and Google will return results from the music search feature, and users can play the song right on the search results page.Big Winners: Lala and MySpace The big winners here are obviously Lala and MySpace/iLike. For Lala, this has been an especially busy period. Just last week, Lala announced a partnership with Facebook. It now powers Facebook’s music gifting service. iLike has a traditional streaming model. The company streams some song full length and some as 30-second samples. Users can buy MP3s from iLike for between $0.99 and $1.29. MySpace bought iLike earlier this year, and the widget on the Google search results page will be MySpace-branded.Lala’s business model is more interesting. Users can stream every song on the service once for free. After that, customers can buy the right to stream it for $0.10 or buy the MP3 for $0.89. Users can also upload their own music library to Lala and then stream those songs freely over the Internet. How important this move is for the two streaming music services becomes clear when we look at the current traffic data for music-related searches on Google. Update: We just had a quick chat with Lala’s CEO Geoff Ralston after the event. The Lala team is obviously very excited about the partnership with Google and as Ralston told us, the company worked with Google for quite a while to get this new feature up and running. According to Ralston, Lala’s partners in the music industry were very supportive of the integration. We also asked him if he was worried that the new influx of traffic was going to bring Lala’s servers down. Google, however, stress tested Lala’s servers and couldn’t bring the service down with up to 550 queries per second. What Does Google’s Current Music Traffic Look Like? Hitwise’s Heather Dougherty took a close look at Google’s music traffic earlier today. According to Hitwise’s data, about 6% of last month’s top 1000 search terms on Google were music-related. In total, Google sent about 1.48% of its traffic to music sites. The majority of these searches (15.32%) lead to a Wikipedia site, but almost 10% currently go to YouTube, 5.7% to Yahoo Music and 3% to MySpace. Now that users can listen to music right from the search results page, these services – including Google’s own YouTube – will likely see a drop in music-related traffic over the next few weeks. 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market

The game-maker is in the middle of a lawsuit against George Hotz, a well known hacker in the jailbreaking community, who published code and a YouTube video online in January, with details on how to jailbreak Sony’s Playstation 3. While the legalities around jailbreaking and intellectual property are one thing, Sony has added more fuel to the fire, arguably, with what Wired describes as “aggressive pretrial discovery demands.” Sony has demanded that Google turn over the IP addresses of those who have viewed or commented on the jailbreak video on YouTube. It has also demanded that Twitter provide the identities of those who revealed the hack.Sony has been granted a temporary restraining order against Hotz, who’s removed his information about the hack from the Web. For its part, Sony appears to have deleted the tweet containing the code. But as the company may be realizing with its failure to shut down Hotz, it’s not so easy to delete information from the Internet. 5 Outdoor Activities for Beating Office Burnout Related Posts 4 Keys to a Kid-Safe App Tags:#gaming#NYT#web

Residents of Portmore are being urged to capitalize on the economic opportunities that are available to them, especially in light of the sheer population of the municipality. The call came from Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Portia Simpson Miller, who was addressing a civic ceremony at the Power of Faith Ministries in the Portmore Mall on June 28, where she was presented with the Key to the Municipality.Mrs. Simpson Miller noted that there are tremendous opportunities for business development in the community.“You must seek to expand business friendliness and work to open up as many outlets as possible for the entrepreneurial spirit of our people here in this municipality,” the Prime Minister said. She cited the growth of the business community over the years, and the “remarkable transformation from a dormitory community to a thriving business district.”“In fact, if we recall where Portmore was ten years ago, and pause to truly take stock of the development that has taken place here, we will conclude that Portmore has indeed come a far way. This is not to say the journey is to stop here. The journey is to continue,” Mrs. Simpson Miller said. The Prime Minister urged the Council and residents to prepare themselves to take advantage of their proximity to several big investment projects, such as the planned Caymanas Logistics Centre and the 750,000 square feet of factory space in Naggo Head, that will be developed into an ultra-modern technology park with the potential to employ some 12,000 persons.Contact: Andrea Braham
BOBCAYGEON, Ont. – When Dave Bailey first heard last year that Gord Downie had terminal brain cancer, he knew he needed to head to Bobcaygeon, Ont., after the Tragically Hip frontman died. The Pickering, Ont., native wasn’t sure if anyone would be gathered, but he figured he would head straight to the source of one of band’s hit singles.“I thought, ‘What can I do?’” Bailey said. “I could donate to cancer society, and I have, but I got to do something to memorialize him so I figured drive to Bobcaygeon and watch the constellations reveal themselves one star at a time.”Downie, the Hip’s lead singer, died Tuesday at age 53.The song “Bobcaygeon” is from the Hip’s 1998 album “Phantom Power” and earned a Juno Award for best single in 2000.Bailey was one of around 50 people who gathered near the water Wednesday night in the town in eastern Ontario’s cottage country to commemorate Downie.Candles were placed on the ground and illuminated local musician Richard Kyle, who strummed along to famous Hip songs “Wheat Kings,” “Ahead by a Century,” and of course, “Bobcaygeon,” on his black acoustic guitar.Kyle planned on playing a few Hip songs in dedication to Downie regardless of whether anyone would show up.“I’ve been a fan of the band since ’89, when I really started getting into them,” Kyle said. “I’ve met everybody in the band a bunch of times. They’re a big influence musically and how you should treat people and how you should relate to other people and get along.”Residents of Bobcaygeon remembered Downie for putting them on the map by writing the hit song about their town.“He’s mythologised our town in a way that is incomparable,” local business owner Sacha Douglas said. “We feel a great connection to him, always have.“There’s not a whole lot of towns in Canada of this size that you can ask anybody in Canada, ‘Have you heard of Bobcaygeon?’ And everyone will have heard of it. It’s quite remarkable, actually.”The community, which has a population of just over 3,500, hosted a viewing party in August 2016 for the Hip’s final stop of the “Man Machine Poem” tour. Bobcaygeon shut down its main street and residents set up lawn chairs and sat on rooftops to watch the Kingston, Ont., show on three jumbo screens set up throughout the community’s main stretch.Over 6,000 people brought out their cameras or cell phones to sing along with Downie as the band started to play “Bobcaygeon.”Kawartha Lakes city councillor Kathleen Seymour-Fagan says she was shocked at the amount of people that showed up for the viewing.“I think it brought the town together,” Seymour-Fagan said. “It’s always been quite a strong community but when that song is being played, you can feel a sense of pride and hear a sense of pride. People come in from other areas and want to come to Bobcaygeon because it has been encapsulated by The Tragically Hip as the Canadian cottage town.”Added Taylor Poole: “It showed a town that really rallied behind their support of this band and this man who is a great Canadian. We were fortunate to have the tie of this man to our town. It feels special that way.”The community used the opportunity to raise funds for brain cancer research, at the viewing with collection boxes and later through merchandise.Douglas and her husband designed a shirt which they sold at their business that said “Courage” in red lettering and underneath “Thanks man, Bobcaygeon.” That design sold out on multiple occasions.Another T-shirt design by the Poole family had “Bobcaygeon, Hip Town.”The sales of shirts, hats and hoodies in 2016 raised $23,000, which was donated to Sunnybrook Hospital.“He’s really impacted us and I think he’s a national hero,” Douglas said. “I think the example he’s set for the good that you can do is something that we should all strive to do and you can make a difference.”— Follow @RyanBMcKenna on Twitter
