St. Anne’s student locked up for littering

first_imgA first year student at St Anne’s College was arrested on Sunday after attemtpting to throw a bottle of water to a protestor.Jonathan Leighton had tried to give a bottle of water to tree protestor Gabriel Chamberlain, who occupied a sycamore in Bonn Square for 12 days to protest against Oxford City Council chopping down the trees to redevelop the area.Leighton said,  “I shouted up to Gabriel that I was going to throw water to him, but it was a bit of a rubbish throw and it didn’t make it.” The throw fell short of the heights of the sycamore tree, landing on the grass nearby. A policeman handcuffed Jonathan, arresting him on the grounds of dropping litter.Leighton claimed to be surprised by the arrest. He said, “The next thing I knew, these police officers had run over to me and said they were arresting me. I said to them, ‘What for?’ and they said it was for littering. I couldn’t really believe what was happening. I just remember shouting over to my friend: ‘I’m being arrested!’”Leighton was handcuffed and taken to St Aldate’s police station, where he was held for three hours while he had his fingerprints, DNA and photograph taken, and was eventually released without charge at 5.15am. Leighton said that he felt the officers  carrying out the arrest “abused their power” and is seeking legal advice. He said, “The police need to be held accountable for their actions. I feel they were completely over the top and unnecessary. There was absolutely no need to arrest me. Even if I don’t pursue legal action, I will still be reporting the matter to the Independent Police Complaints Commission. I think the whole thing has been ridiculous.”Police would not comment on Leighton’s complaints but Chief Supt Brendan O’Dowda confirmed a man was arrested for littering in Bonn Square and was released without charge. He said, “I can’t go into the whys and wherefores of the arrest itself.”A ‘ring of steel’ was erected around Gabriel on Friday as police and council officials waited for him to surrender. The 34-year-old was cut off from food and water supplies from his supporters after the authorities surrounded the tree with metal fences.Jonathan Leighton said, “I wanted to give Gabriel some water because I felt that instead of listening to the message of his protest, security stopped him from gaining access to food and water which I thought was wrong.” He is fully in support of Gabriel’s protest. “I don’t think the plans for the site are very good. I’m up for improving Bonn Square, but I don’t see the need to cut down trees that are more than 100 years old.’’Chamberlain was met by council officials and police upon descending from the tree-house, and was subsequently arrested. Both Chamberlain and his campaigning partner, Brian Melling, were fined £276 by Judge Morton Jack.Melling had attempted to stop the felling by climbing into a council-owned chipping truck.  Ill health was cited as the reason why the protestors gave up their campaign, however, during the hearing the protestors handed over a petition signed by 3500 supporters for their causeby Omotola Akerelelast_img read more

Is Jive Software Taking Steps Toward An IPO?

first_img3 Areas of Your Business that Need Tech Now Related Posts IT + Project Management: A Love Affair Tags:#enterprise#news#NYT If there is any doubt about the social Web moving into the enterprise, then the news today from Jive Software has to make even the hardest skeptics start to wonder. The Portland, Oregon company that has built its success on providing a social layer to the enterprise is pursuing a path that may lead it to a public offering.Fueled by venture capital, the company said today that it is looking for a new CEO.Current CEO Dave Hersh is stepping aside from his role to become chairman of the Jive board. The interim CEO will be Tony Zingale, a Jive board member.Hersh has lead the company since 2001. He will lead the search effort for a new CEO. Zingale is an experienced CEO. He most recently lead Mercury Interactive, a company acquired for $5 billion. He was also CEO of Clarify, a CRM company. In a phone interview today, company executives said an IPO is a possibility. It’s a move that makes sense. Jive is now competing with the largest technology companies in the market. For instance, Jive has a Sharepoint integration with Microsoft. But the reality is the two companies are vying for the same accounts. The issue is size. Companies like Microsoft have huge sales channels. Jive does not have that kind of reach. An IPO would give Jive the resources to compete more effectively with the giants of the tech world. It’s also a clear sign that the market is there for social software in the enterprise. Hersh said to us in an interview recently that there is a mad chase for all applications to be social. That’s quite true. And Jive’s dreams of an IPO are representative of that reality.center_img alex williams Massive Non-Desk Workforce is an Opportunity fo… Cognitive Automation is the Immediate Future of…last_img read more

Ajay Mankotia on World Cup’s Tebbit Test

first_imgSo which nation’s team would Queen Maxima cheer when The Netherlands were to take on Argentina in the second semi-final of the World Cup?” wondered the Dutch media. Maxima is married to the monarch of The Netherlands, but was born in Argentina and her dual nationality, and her true loyalties, have been the subject of much speculation.SupportThe queen was born Maxima Zorreguieta in Buenos Aires, and grew up there – including, when she was seven years old, during Argentina’s 1978 World Cup victory at the expense of the Dutch. Officially, for the semi-final it was stated Maxima would join her subjects to sing “Hup Holland hup,” the Netherlands Government Information Service confirmed. “Naturally, the King and Queen are supporters of the Dutch team. Queen Maxima is Dutch and thus supports the Netherlands,” the Service said. The semi-final was not the first time Maxima’s loyalties have been tested. The Netherlands are out having been beaten by Argentina 4-2 on penalties and thus take on old foes Germany in Sunday’s showpiece. The match was a repeat of the 1986 and 1990 World Cup finals, the first of which was won by Argentina before the then West Germany gained revenge four years later. So who will the President of Argentina Cristina Kirchner root for? Her mother, Ofelia Esther Wilhelm, was of German descent. Who will the Argentine Germans cheer for? Germans today make up the fourth-largest group in Argentina, constituting 8 per cent of the Argentine population. German is currently the fifth most spoken language.advertisementBetween 1885 and World War-I the population of Argentina doubled with the influx of three million European immigrants, 100,000 of whom spoke German. Strong German communities developed in Argentina; they had their own schools, hospitals, shops, theatres, sports clubs and banks. After a pause during World War-I, immigration to Argentina again resumed and German speakers came in large numbers. From 1933 to 1940, Argentina experienced another surge in German immigration. The majority were German Jews although other German opponents of Nazism also came. Argentina and Germany had close ties, as trade developed between the two countries as early as the German Unification, and Germany had a privileged position in the Argentine economy. There was also a military connection between Argentina and Germany. Sympathy for Germany among the General Staff in Buenos Aires contributed to establishing Argentina’s policy of neutrality during the two world wars. There was widespread support for Nazi Germany among the Argentines. After World War-II, Nazis were looking for a new home to avoid prosecution. Under Peron’s government, Argentina participated in establishing escape routes out of Germany to South America. Some notorious Nazis that emigrated to Argentina were Adolf Eichmann – Hitler’s architect of the Holocaust – and Josef Mengele – the Angel of Death – known for performing deadly human experiments on prisoners.IncentiveWhy would Argentina want the Nazis? During World War-II, Argentina favoured the Axis because of cultural ties with Germany, Spain and Italy since most Argentines were of Spanish, Italian or German descent. None more so than Peron himself, who served as an adjunct officer in Benito Mussolini’s Italian army in the late 1930s. Nazi Germany nurtured this sympathy, promising important trade concessions after the war. There was also a financial incentive for Argentina to accept these men. Nazi leaders plundered millions from the Jews they had murdered and some of that money accompanied them to Argentina. Most Nazis who went to Argentina lived out their lives quietly, fearing repercussions if they were too vocal or visible. This was particularly true after 1960, when Adolf Eichmann was snatched off a street in Buenos Aires by Mossad agents and whisked off to Israel. There he was tried and executed. His abduction was the subject matter of three movies – The House on Garibaldi Street (1979), The Man Who Captured Eichmann (1996) and Eichmann (2007). Josef Mengele drowned in Brazil in 1979 after being the object of a manhunt for decades.TestOf course, the Nazis formed a minuscule percentage of the Argentine Germans. The preamble of Argentina’s constitution promotes immigration, and recognises the individual’s multiple citizenship from other countries. A high level of multiculturalism remains a feature of Argentina’s culture, allowing foreign festivals and holidays, and supporting cultural expression from ethnic groups. In this environment of pluralism, the influence of German culture is all pervasive. It has impacted Argentine cuisine too. The pastries known as facturas are Germanic in origin. Also German in origin is the Berliner. The Kreppel were introduced by German immigrants, as was the Achtzig Schlag cake. In addition, dishes like sauerkraut and many different kinds of sausage like bratwurst have also made it into Argentine cuisine.advertisementComing to sport some Argentine Germans have also played soccer such as Juan Esnaider, Rodolfo Fischer, Claudio Graf, Gabriel Heinze, Rene Houseman and Gabriel Schurrer. The dilemma of Queen Maxima is shared by many Argentine-Germans many of whom will be subjected to the ‘Tebbit Test’ on Sunday. This phrase coined in April 1990 by British politician Norman Tebbit was in reference to the perceived lack of loyalty of immigrants and their children from South Asia and the Caribbean to the English cricket team. Tebbit suggested those immigrants who support their native countries in cricket are not integrated into the UK. So will the Argentine Germans pass this test on Sunday?- The author is a former IRS officerlast_img read more
