Governor Wolf Rejects Partisan Gerrymandered Map (Round-Up)

first_img National Issues,  Redistricting,  Round-Up,  The Blog,  Voting & Elections On Tuesday, Governor Wolf told the Pennsylvania Supreme Court that he will not accept the proposed congressional map submitted by Republican legislative leaders.“Partisan gerrymandering weakens citizen power, promotes gridlock, and stifles meaningful reform,” Governor Wolf said. “As non-partisan analysts have already said, their map maintains a similar partisan advantage by employing many of the same unconstitutional tactics present in their 2011 map.“The analysis by my team shows that, like the 2011 map, the map submitted to my office by Republican leaders is still a gerrymander. Their map clearly seeks to benefit one political party, which is the essence of why the court found the current map to be unconstitutional.”Take a look at the coverage below: By: Governor Tom Wolf’s Office of Communications Governor Wolf Rejects Partisan Gerrymandered Map (Round-Up) February 14, 2018 The Washington Post: The Latest: Analysis finds GOP skew in Pennsylvania planA new analysis by experts shows that a Pennsylvania redistricting plan rejected by Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf would have been favorable to Republicans. The analysis released Tuesday predicts that Republicans would have won 11 of the state’s 18 congressional districts under the plan crafted by Republican legislative leaders in response to a state Supreme Court ruling against the current districts. Republicans currently hold 13 seats.Trib Live: Gov. Wolf rejects GOP’s new congressional district mapGov. Tom Wolf on Tuesday rejected a new congressional district map that state Republican leaders submitted to the State Supreme Court last week. In a letter to State House Speaker Mike Turzai and Senate President Pro Tempore Joe Scarnati, Wolf said the map favors Republicans. The court ordered lawmakers to craft the new map last month after ruling that the old map, drawn in 2011, violates the state constitution by unfairly favoring Republicans. The Daily Beast: ‘Partisan Gerrymander’ Pennsylvania Governor Wolf Rejects the GOP’s Redrawn Electoral MapPennsylvania’s Democratic Governor Tom Wolf on Tuesday rejected a new proposed map for the state’s congressional districts, saying the legislature’s top Republicans submitted an unconstitutional gerrymander. “Partisan gerrymandering weakens citizen power, promotes gridlock, and stifles meaningful reform,” Governor Wolf said in a statement to The Daily Beast. “As non-partisan analysts have already said, their map maintains a similar partisan advantage by employing many of the same unconstitutional tactics present in their 2011 map.” Republican leadership submitted the redrawn map to Wolf on Friday. From there, Wolf had until this Thursday to to tell the state Supreme Court whether he approved of the map. If he did, it would be enacted. The legislature and the governor need to come to an agreement by Thursday or the state’s Supreme Court will do the redraw. The Inquirer: Gov. Wolf rejects Pennsylvania Republicans’ map proposal, saying it remains a partisan gerrymanderWolf complained that some key areas are divided, pointing to the fact that Montgomery County would be split four times, and said the Wilkes-Barre area appears to be “divided without explanation” into two districts. The governor took issue with Republicans’ argument that their map minimizes the “confusion factor” by leaving 70 percent of voters in the same congressional district. Wolf said he finds that claim “dubious at best.” “This serves no legal purpose, was not a requirement of the court and voters will have months and many means to obtain information on candidates and the districts before voting,” the governor wrote.Slate: Pennsylvania Governor Rejects Latest GOP Gerrymander, Ensuring Court-Drawn Map for MidtermsWolf declared he would not accept the new map because it fails to “comply with the court’s order or Pennsylvania’s Constitution.” He also rejected the proposal because it was drawn exclusively by two Republican leaders without approval from the legislature, as ordered by the court.center_img   SHARE  TWEET Like Governor Tom Wolf on Facebook: SHARE Email Facebook Twitterlast_img read more

Picture special: Hundreds turn out for Manus Kelly Tribute Night

first_imgOVER 600 people packed into the Mount Errigal Hotel last night for a tribute night in memory of the late Manus Kelly.Pictures by Brian McDaidThe Glenswilly man died tragically in June while competing at the 2019 Donegal International Rally – an event he had won in each of the previous three years. Manus had so many strings to his bow, from his family, to politics, to rallying, Gaelic football, business and life in general. It was in rallying circles where he was best known. Many competitors and friends turned out to pay their tributes on what was an emotional night of reflection. The father-of-five was a newly elected Fianna Fáil County Councillor at the time of his death. Leas-Cheann Comhairle Pat ‘The Cope’ Gallagher and Charlie McConalogue TD led a large Fianna Fáil representation on the night, with several County Councillors also present.Ballyshannon native Sean Perry conducted a public auction with 13 items raising in excess of €70,000. A silent auction took place online at the same time and also proved a huge success.  Denis Ferry and his son, Matthew, traveled the length and breadth of Ireland getting a shirt signed by all previous winners of the Donegal International and the item raised €12,000 last week in New York.A Memorial Trust has been established in Manus’s honour.“Our goals are to keep Manus’ legacy and memory alive, and also to assist Manus’s wife Bernie and their children in their future, which is what was at the heart of what Manus lived for,” the Trust says. The proceeds raised will have a phased distribution and the Trust has four trustees – Donall Barrett, Paul Doyle, Seamus Doherty and Damian Doherty.Anne Mc Fadden and Roseleen ConnellyPaddy O’Donnell with Bernie and son Manus at on of Manus’ first rally car which was on show tonight at the Mt Errigal Hotel.Cllr Martin Mc Dermott, Cllr Rena Donaghey, Charlie Mc Conalouge T.D. Google+ Update Adds Crazy Big Cover Photos + Other Stuff

first_imgTags:#Google#social media#user interface design The latest changes to Google+ might not have a huge impact – but that doesn’t mean they aren’t huge.Wednesday, Google revamped its Google+ profile pages, making the social network more image-heavy and sprucing up a few Google+ areas that were collecting virtual cobwebs. The announcement appeared as a blog post by Googler Sara McKinely and was then shared widely by Google+ guru Vic Gundotra. Cleaning Up The About PageThe update cleans up users’ About pages, where personal, educational and professional info live. Previously the About page was an odd tangle of editable boxes, and it wasn’t always clear what information was private or public. Now Google+ has added in a “View profile as” button (à la Facebook), making for handy, quick way to check who can see what on your profile. The page is also much more attractive, with color-coded boxes displaying personal information in cards, as you can see in the image below: Images via Google+. Related Posts A Comprehensive Guide to a Content Audit taylor hatmakercenter_img The Dos and Don’ts of Brand Awareness Videos Guide to Performing Bulk Email Verification Facebook is Becoming Less Personal and More Pro… The biggest change, or the most unavoidably eye-catching anyway, is that atop the new Google+ profile pages, users can select one massive image to display at up to 2120 x 1192 pixels. The cover photo completely dominates everything else about the profile page – literally nothing else appears above the fold.Sweating The Small StuffBeyond the literally big stuff, Google has added a shortcut to its Local hub, where reviews of restaurants and venues show up, all linked to a reviewer’s respective Google+ account, of course. Google+’s thriving photo community will no doubt be excited about today’s interface changes. Personally, I’m dreading what happens when graphically challenged Google+ users start uploading their newest baby photos at insufficient resolution. Ick.The changes to the look of Google+ come a day before Facebook’s March 7 press event, where it’s speculated that the big blue social network could infuse News Feed with larger images while doing a bit of UI spring cleaning itself.last_img read more
